QUESTION: Can I use this grinder for salt?
ANSWER: No. This grinder was designed specifically for grinding peppercorns. Grinding salt will eventually cause the steel grinding mechanism to corrode. For grinding salt, use a grinder with a ceramic grinding mechanism.
QUESTION: Are there any plastic parts used in this grinder?
ANSWER: Only one. The central shaft support is made from food-grade ABS plastic. The support centers the shaft to keep the grinding mechanism centered. This results in smooth and consistent grinding as well as making it easier to reinstall the top after filling.
QUESTION: How do you open it?
ANSWER: You simply unscrew the adjusting knob on top and lift the top off. This makes it easily refillable.
QUESTION: How is the grinding coarseness adjustable?
ANSWER: Turn the adjusting knob on top clockwise for a fine grind and counterclockwise for a coarse grind. Always turn the grinder top CLOCKWISE when grinding. The grinder is designed to feed peppercorns down into the grinder and turning it counterclockwise will try to force the peppercorns upward out of the grinder. This will result in an inconsistent grind or no grind at all.
QUESTION: What type of wood is it made from?
ANSWER: It is made from solid rubberwood which is a medium-density tropical hardwood obtained from the Para rubber tree grown in rubber plantations. Rubberwood is an "environmentally friendly" wood, as it makes use of plantation trees that have already served a useful function.
